Lighting Portfolio - Autumn Morrison
Enjoy this sample of residential lighting I've been blessed to oversee, suggest, source and sell.
There's a wide range of styles from over the years (decades). It's not my job to light houses my way - it's my job to light your house your way - the common thread being thoughtful lighting.
Spider Spot Light in Hallway
I love this spot light for this space and I'm so glad the homeowner went for it. The matte bronze finish of the Spider spot light complements the chocolate, colour-drenched hallway. The ability to angle the direction of the light means we can highlight a wall instead of just pointing downwards. The fitting itself is a technical superstar. It's powerful, dimmable, and the LED is available in 2 kelvins. The crystal lens bends the light into a wide, crisp, beautiful beam. This is what happens when you buy your lights from a lighting professional with decades of experience and a true love of lighting excellence.
Catellani & Smith Pendant in Staircase
It may seem counter intuitive not to go for a long, vertical pendant, but this spherical pendant works beautifully here, sublime and subtle, like the moon suspended in space. When it's lit, the split in the middle creates a stunning wrap around lighting effect, spreading across the entire space. The lighting effect is lined up with the landing banister, framing the remarkable light and shadow play wonderfully.
Catellani & Smith Wall Lights in Entrance
These stunning (rather large) wall lights are works of art. The light source is located at the bottom of the fitting, shining back onto the hand-finished silver lining. The shadow effect (not shown here, unfortunately) is dramatic and vaulted, perfect for the double height wall.
Axo Chandelier in Staircase
This was a phenomenal project (the whole house, truthfully). This chandelier by Axo Light (who flew me out to Venice to tour their factories when I was a national sales manager placing their lights throughout the USA) absolutely blew the roof off this house, alighting it with fire and light. I modiffied the spec to make it extra long so that it traversed 2 floors. So many details, trust and time. And phenomenal results.
Wall Lights In Swimming Pool
So many things to consider when lighting this stunning swimming pool. I did not, under any circumstances, wish to interrupt the incredible sight lines by ruining the ceiling with spot lights, which would look ugly when floating in the pool and pepper the water with glarey spots when switched on, not to mention - impossible to service. So I took to the walls, and found lights that not only did the job, but spoke the same language as the architecture.
Plastered-In Downlights in a Sitting Room
Loved that the client trusted me to do these plastered-in downlights in a wave. Drove the electrician around the bend!
Bijou Wall Lights in a Home Office
Sometimes the best way to light a space is from the walls, not the ceiling. These little (they are very little) wall lights from Italy pack a punch, as evident by the uplighting smoothly cascading upwards in this dormer - and this is during the day, when most artificial lighting gets washed out. Imagine how beautiful this lighting is at night. If you notice little black lines to the inside of each light, it's cause the electrician wired them in the wrong place originally, it was fixed and plastered over (he drove me nuts).
Nostalgia Pendants over Long Dining Table
These beautiful pendants have so many details to point out - firstly, their modern take on a classic shape gives them timeless appeal. The light source is tucked up inside the hardware - so no light bulbs on show and allows for them to be produced on a smaller scale. Because the homeowner bought them from me, she was able to select the black hardware finish, which was new at the time, along with the black cables, which you wouldn't find on any online lighting websites (except for mine).
Pivot Linear Pendant over Kitchen Island
This may seem simple but it was anything but. The skylights dictated what we could consider in terms of mounting, and I found this linear pendant to do the job. It's a super-powerful (over 4000 lumens!), dimmable, adjustable light with a bronze finish. The adjustable lens means that she can tilt it downwards when she needs the light (notice there is no other light apart from the concealed LED) and tilt it upwards when she wants to relax at night. Note: the electric cables hadn't been cut yet so looks messy but they did get cut!
Dot Wall Lights Exterior Lighting Back of House
These Dot wall lights provided ample, much needed glare-free lighting for this stunning home in Cheshire. During the day, they are practically invisible, and blending into the overall architecture beautifully thanks to their discreet, small, snug body and RAL custom finish selected by the (lovely) homeowner. By night, the high-quality beams of light ensconce the house in security and ease nighttime navigation.
Bamboo Bollards Exterior Lighting
Look how clean and powerful these beams of light are. It's a double headed bollard by Vibia (there are many versions with different amounts of heads). The beams cast across the walkway as well as some of the greenery and drive. The beam across the walkway is stronger because the aperature is lower to the ground. Understanding how light travels, behaves, changes is a life-time quest. Dramatic, effective, unforgettable.
Taper Chandelier in Master Bedroom
The Taper chandelier is a perfect match for this master bedroom with vaulted ceilings, pitched window and sweeping views. The black finish on the chandelier speaks to the window frame, and the overall classic cone shape complements the sloped ceilings on either side. The soft, romantic lighting is well suited for a bedroom, glowing like candlelight. When it's switched off, the glass shades are a thing of beauty on their own, quietly waiting to light up the night.
Home Gym Lighting
This subterranean home gym is part of an indoor swimming pool zone. I wanted to delineate the high energy workout home gym from the chilling party vibe of the swimming pool zone. I kept the perimeter lighting consistent but broke out the gym with a scattering of plastered-in recessed linear lights in a random fashion, for excitement (and lots of lumens).
Asteria Pendants in Black
I was brought in to find a lighting solution for this tricky ceiling in the entryway of this art-loving converted barn. The double vaults were uneven and deep. I choose the Asteria pendants to calm the space down with their simplicity, low profile, wide, powerful light output and low cost (and they come with a 10 year warranty!). The homeowner loves them and so do I.
Kitchen Sink Pendants
The large, chunky cut crystals hang in tantalising proximity to people by the sink but also, out of the way and not obstructive. The crystals themselves don't have any light (or electrics) but they are lit from above via that white box type structure. The lighting is both functional and stunning. Plus, the crystals play with natural sunlight, dancing rainbows here and there, much to the children's (and adults) delight.
Layered Lighting in Bathroom
Like most rooms, bathrooms benefit tremendously from layered lighting. In this example, you'll see the crystal glass downlights (so much better than staring up at a light bulb or LED chips), glowing wall lights and you may not notice (at first) the two uplights behind the tub, framing the arch window and casting a calming, relaxing glow on the ceiling, perfect for a long, lovely soak.
Bugia Ceiling Lights in Bedroom
This was a great challenge - the homeowner was over 6' tall and the ceilings were low. I've always loved the Bugia ceiling lights (though I wish they could come up with a matte finish ;) and they were perfect for this job. Not only did they provide ample lighting for the room (look at the lovely pool of light on the floor) they also uplit the ceiling, a brilliant trick for making low ceilings feel higher, less cave like. Can you guess how many cables the electrician had to fit? 3 - there are 3 individual lights in this cluster, and arranging them was an art in itself.
Trimless Downlights in Home Cinema
Strategically placed downlights in this home cinema in Alderley Edge. There's hidden storage for guitars behind the screen, so I had to make sure there was enough light when needed. It worked out quite well.
Maserio Crystal Chandelier by Staircase
This staircase went up the middle, with the two sides being open below. So where to hang a light? I suggested we use the corner to our advantage. I found this crystal classic, complete with a silver fabric chain cover at a fairly decent price because she opted for glass instead of lead crystal, which is much more expensive. Once lit, it took the homeowners breath away which brought me enormous joy. The crystals reflected off the walls, reflections which otherwise would have been diluted or lost all together, if not for having a wall near by.
Fabbian Wall Lights on 1st Floor Hallway/Landing
When the homeowner explained that she had a dark, glitter wall paper, I knew the perfect wall lights for this hall (which is actually the landing with the previous crystal chandelier). The wall lights carried through from the ground floor (this is the 1st floor) but I switched the shades downstairs to white, for a less moody, bedroom feel. You can see this house with all the lighting I did on a Netflix show 'Cold Call'.
Marset Exterior Floor Lamps on Patio
Happiness is when you show your clients a wild idea and they love it. You may not notice, but the floor lamps don't have a base (or messy cables). They are hardwired into the patio stone. Talk about getting the details right! This is possible when a lighting expert is in charge of the ordering, all the details and site requirements come together. And what beautiful lighting it creates around the outdoor dining table.
Traditional Lantern Pendant in Front Porch
This is one of my first jobs, in Portland, Maine. My client was an Olympic medalist winner in sailing. He was brilliant at his thing and he recognised that I was pretty good at my thing, and I lit his whole house. One of the first of many, many beautiful and brilliant homes I've had the absolute pleasure of lighting. Thank you, to all of my clients, from the bottom of my passionate heart.
