  • Why your electrician shouldn't design your lighting

Electricians are not lighting designers — obvious in theory, but easily forgotten when you're under pressure on-site and someone needs an answer now. See how a lighting designer differs from an electrician

Lighting Design Costs

Transparent Pricing for Residential Lighting Design

Expert lighting design shouldn't be a mystery — and neither should the cost. At Lighting Guru, you pay only for the time you need, in flexible blocks starting from £25. No retainers, no hidden fees, no surprises. You decide how much - or how little - time to spend. I'll advise you what we might need, after our free consultation, and then you decide what you're comfortable with. I'll work very hard to pack as much value into the allotted time. And if I go over our agreed time (which happens more than I care to admit!) I won't charge you for the extra time. I'm very keen to get it right and when I get into the flow of your project, it's hard to stop!

How Much Does Lighting Design Cost in the UK?

Some residential lighting designers charge a day rate or project fee, which can make it hard to know what you're committing to upfront. I like to keep it simple. A clear hourly rate, and you decide how many blocks of time you want to start with and what the priorities are.

I check in with my clients throughout the design process, to let them know where we're up to with time, keeping them in control of their costs.

You only pay for what you actually need, you can dip in and out as your project develops.

*Typical time requirements:

  • Single room — 1–4 hours (£50–£200)
  • Per floor — 5–10 hours (£250–£500)
  • Exterior lighting — 1–10 hours (£50–£500)
  • Whole home — varies by project; I'll give you an estimate on a free consultation call

*Typical means this can vary, depending on the project.

What's Included?

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to know how much time I'll need upfront?
No — most clients start with a smaller block and top up as the project develops. Book a free consultation to discuss how much time you might need or tell me your budget and we'll figure out the best objectives to focus on.

Is VAT included?
All prices shown are exclusive of VAT (I am VAT registered)

Do you charge for the initial consultation?
No. Your first call is completely free — no obligation, no pressure.

Do you work across the whole of the UK?
Yes. Consultations are conducted either remotely via phone or video call with clients across the UK — and/or face to face meetings and site walk throughs when possible. I've lit homes in London, Cornwall and Wales to name a few - all from my home base here in Wilmslow, Cheshire. I've even helped some fine folks in America figure out what to do with their lighting!

Do you conduct on-site meetings?
Yes, whenever possible — but this is bound by a 45-minute travel radius and travel time is billable. Most clients are very happy working remotely, but site visits are possible under certain circumstances.
