Autumn Morrison, Residential Lighting Designer

Early days in Miami, Florida (leopord top). Like so many others, I had a wake up call after 9/11, realising that life is short and precious so I took the leap from a paid lighting sales manager to starting my own lighting design business.

I moved from Portland, Maine to South Beach, Miami - a total design mecca. I joined the Miami Design Preservation League, the City Council and the local AIA (American Institute of Architects) because I was so passionate about design.

At a city meeting, I asked the Bass Museum director what she was going to do about the glare on the art work? She said a fancy lighting designer from NYC was going to sort it. I said, "okay, keep my number," and fast forward 3 months later I not only lit the permanent collection, I lit a Picasso exhibit, a Frida Kahlo exhibit and the Art Basal show. My name circulated around the private sector and I lit some seriously impressive homes.

Then I met an Englishman ... and though that didn't last, my love for lighting certainly has, and happily lighting homes here in the UK since 2008.

Send me a message about your lighting project, I'd love to help.

Background

I'm passionate about improving people's enjoyment of their home by improving their lighting. I began my career in lighting back in 1999, in a lighting showroom in Portland, Maine (USA). I had recently moved to Maine from New York City, a bit burned out from a successful high-pressured stint in real estate at Citi Habitats. I've always loved homes from a young age, and finding homes for people was wonderful but pretty cut-throat and stressful - more concerned with money and signing deals than the beauty of the home, which is what makes my heart pound. Ready for my next chapter, I left the city and was wandering through downtown Portland, Maine, and walked by a fascinating shop window, glowing with the most beautiful cacophony of lights I had ever seen. I spied a little 'help wanted' sign and that's how it all started. At first, I thought it was a home interior shop and was a bit put off when I found out it was ONLY lights, thinking I would get bored. How wrong I was. My passion was lit. Eclipsing the long-standing sales person's sales in under 6 months, I soon had my own office on the top floor, working on floor plans till midnight, hunting down for lights for people, and waking up the next day, buzzing with excitement to show my customers what I found for them. To this day, I am never bored by lighting, there's always something to learn, something to solve, something to marvel at, something to seek, something to find, something to share.

Collaboration is Key

If you're reading this, it's because your interested, in one way or another, in lighting. And that's a great place to start. Each job/project is unique, although the goal is always the same - to get the lighting right. That being said, lighting is subjective and highly personal - what one person loves another may not. Successful lighting means it matches the personality of the homeowner. This is achieved through teamwork and trust. Collaboration is key - my experience and product knowledge combined with your vision, your desire. The main ingredient to being able to light a space correctly is asking the right questions and listening with an open mind. This discovery process is fundamental to achieving the best lighting. If someone starts telling you where to put your lights without asking you questions, be wary. Whenever I light a space, it's always with the customer at the heart of it all.
