Kitchens are the hardest working rooms in the house, as well as the heart of most homes. You'll do well to give your kitchen lighting a lot of love. Consider lighting this important room in layers. Task light for chopping and cleaning, ambient lighting for general lighting and accent lighting for creating a welcoming atmosphere to sit and chat over a cuppa or a glass of something else warming.

Top Tip: Try to get light directly over your sink - if the light is behind you, you'll create a shadow, which is annoying when cleaning. If you can't light your sink from the ceiling, consider a wall light (over your window).
